Selling Your Home During the Holidays

The holiday season is stressful enough on its own, but if you’re selling your home this time of year, you’re on an entirely new level. Holiday decorations make your home feel cozy over the holidays and add comfort in this season of anticipation. So, how do you balance the need to decorate and to de-clutter?

Here are some tips for how to make your home festive and still appealing to buyers.

  1. Less is more. Do you have a favorite focal piece or a unique tradition? If so, focus on that. Whether it be a Christmas tree or a menorah that’s been passed down from generation to generation, let that be the focal point. You do not have to put up every single decoration you have and you may want to go for a simple and understated look. For example, we LOVE holiday lights. But you can put them up around the tree, mantles, and outside without going completely Griswold. Try just white lights this year, too, for an elegant look.

  2. Remember to declutter and depersonalize. You can keep your favorite ornaments out, but you don’t have to put up every holiday card you get from friends and family on the mantle. Some stockings will do just fine. Remember, when you’re showing your house, buyers want to see themselves in it. It’s hard to do that if you have every homemade ornament donning the tree or Aunt Linda and her Dachshund in his ugly Christmas sweater on the fridge staring back at you. Keep these items put away or in a private place this year.

  3. Keep the curb appeal. While flowers won’t be blooming in most climates, adding some simple lights outside will add to your curb appeal. It’ll also help illuminate your house and give it a warm glow for those evening showings. If you have some garland on your porch or a few ribbons or a wreath tastefully made up, you’ll enhance those warm elements we cherish this time of year and keep it cozy without overdoing it.

  4. Call up the professionals. Hire a professional cleaning service to keep your space tidy and clean and allow yourself the time to focus on packing and organizing the non-essentials, donating good condition items you no longer need, and tossing those well-loved items.

  5. Don’t be the hostess. You have enough on your plate right now, let others host the gatherings this year.

We hope these tips help you get into the holiday spirit while keeping you sane and your to-do list manageable. If you need to call in some professional stagers, too, we know a great team! :-)
